Under the spiritual leadership of Rabbi Ze'ev Smason, Nusach Hari-B'nai Zion is quickly becoming recognized as a major infuence in the St. Louis Jewish community.
NHBZ is the largest Orthodox Shul in St. Louis. We’ve been around for 100 plus years. We enjoy a lively atmosphere and our members come from all backgrounds of Jewish observance. We make everyone feel at home.
We hold all regular services, have a very active social club, women’s organization, and youth group. We provide programs for all ages -- from the young to the not-so-young. We are open almost ‘round the clock and have outreach programs for the unaffiliated.

| Rabbi Info |
Rabbi Ze'ev Smason is the spiritual leader of Nusach Hari B'nai Zion, the largest orthodox congregation in St. Louis. Raised in Los Angeles, Rabbi Smason graduated from UCLA with a degree in Political Science. He then pursued rabbinical studies for 8 years in Jerusalem, receiving ordination and continuing post-graduate studies while lecturing there on Torah, Philosophy, Ethics, and Current Issues.
From 1988-97 Rabbi Smason was associate director of Aish HaTorah Center of Jewish Studies of St. Louis; from January 1998, through June 1999, he served as Associate Rabbi and Family Educator of Nusach Hari B'nai Zion before being chosen by the membership to assume the pulpit of the synagogue. He lives in University City with his wife, Chani, and their 9 children.
Rabbi Smason has developed a wide range of original classes and programs that have been popularly received by Jews of all educational and religious backgrounds. "I don't know many Jews who, when asked, state that they would like to become Orthodox," Smason says. "I do know many Jews, however, who have a goal to grow and to become better Jews. Such people will be met with a very warm welcome at Nusach Hari B'nai Zion."
Having himself been raised in a loving home with positive Jewish values, but not traditionally observant, Rabbi Smason relates very well to the issues and concerns of secular and unaffiliated Jews who desire to learn more about their heritage, but are unfamiliar with many practices and rituals of traditional Judaism. "Jewish education in the past emphasized the 'what' but neglected the 'why.' Our programs at Nusach Hari B'nai Zion, for both members and non-members, will help them fill that missing gap," Rabbi Smason says.
Home Study Groups, Weekly Learning Sessions, Shabbat and Holiday Learners' Services, expansion and development of Nusach Hari B'nai Zion's Sunday School and Singles' programs are some of the many plans Rabbi Smason will to bring to the synagogue. "We hope to make Nusach Hari B'nai Zion even more 'user friendly' than it has been in the past.
Who are our potential 'users'?", he asks. "Any Jew seeking a warm, friendly community built around traditional Jewish values and practices," he answers. |
