Adapted from Mussar Avos:

The Mishan in Avos says according the explanation o R' Ovadiah Bartenura:

If you don't add on then, one will die.

The general understanding of this statement is that it is a reference to Torah study, warning a person that they must always be increasing their Torah knowledge.

R' Shraga Feveil Mendelovitz- understood this to include a persons spiritual growth and personal development as well. He explains that a person must always be striving to improve in these areas. G-d says to Yehoshua the Kohen that "I have placed you as one who walks among those that stand'. Angels are referred to as standing as they remain constant in one place (this is due to the fact that angels have no free will so they can't change their spiritual position). Man on the other hand is referred to as "walking" as he is given free choice and the ability to improve and elevate himself. This is the reason that G-d put man into this world as the Vilna Goan said that man is placed on this earth to improve his bad quality traits. If a person isn't improving then he in essence is dead as he is actively negating his entire purpose in the world.

Shabbat Shalom,
