The Mishna in Avos, says "jealousy, desire and honor remove a person from this world".

In a continuation from the past two weeks we will focus on the last trait mentioned in the Mishna honor. This trait as well can clearly lead people to sacrifice everything they have and remove themselves from this world in their pursuit of honor. Maybe one of the greatest examples of this is the story of Korach and his cohorts. Korach who belonged to the tribe of Levi was a very distinguished and wealthy individual who led a rebellion against Moshe Rabbenu. What was the reason for his rebellion against Moshe? He wanted to be the High Priest instead of Aharon who was appointed by G-d. His pursuit of honor led to his eventual destruction, death and loss of all of his wealth. This is also one of the reason given for the sin of the spies where Moshe sent spies to search out the Land of Israel, the spies returned with an evil report about the Land and weakened the resolve the Nation. The motivation of the spies (according to our Sages) was due to the fact that they were tribal leaders during the travels of The Jewish People in the desert but when they would enter the land they would forgo this status to other individuals. Their desire to keep their status led them to speak against the Land so the people would remain in the desert and they would remain in power. In the end the spies were punished with a painful death and caused the Nation to sojourn in the desert for 40 years.

Although the pursuit of honor is probably not something most of us feel is an issue we must contend with, as we aren't running to become President or some other "honorable"position, I think this is really the root of one of the greatest pursuits that plagues our society which is the pursuit of money. Some people want money so they can buy the things the need and take care of their family, friends etc. But there is a pursuit of money which is really tied to honor. Our society honors the wealthy, so wealth is really a means of attaining honor and power. This may very well be the driving force behind many people's pursuit of wealth, even though they may not realize this. A question to consider; if we were wealthy and nobody knew it would we be satisfied?

Shabbat Shalom and Happy Chanukah to all,

Heath
