The Mishna says in Avos (5;19) that the third trait distinguishing the students of Avraham Avinu and the students of Bilaam HaRasha is a "subdued soul".

TheĀ  "nefesh" soul of a person is the seat of our physical desires. A person with a "subdued soul" minimizes their physical desires and takes from the world only what the body needs . The opposite of this is a "wide soul". This person has an ever expanding and widening spectrum of physical desires. Once they have done X, tasted Y, visited Z they needĀ  something more enticing, more exciting. This person gets caught up in constantly fulfilling their physical desires which in reality know no end.

A student of Avraham Avinu (which we should all be), looks to minimize what they take from the physical world and doesn't run after the fulfillment of each and every desire they have. Realizing that the race for bigger, better and more exciting only derails them from attaining there true purpose of drawing close to G-d.

Shabbat Shalom,

Heath
