The Mishna in Avos (6;4) says "do not desire the table of kings, because your table is greater than their table and your crown is greater than their crown. The one who hired you is trustworthy to pay you for your work."

The Mishna continues on the theme of the importance of studying Torah and fulfilling the mitzvoth. Many times we may see that we follow the Torah and commandments but things in life don't go the way we want. We may not be as healthy, successful or wealthy as we would want to be or as many other people who seem to disregard the Will of G-d are. One can begin to "desire the table" of these modern day kings. We may think that we are good people and doing good so why don't we have "the table of kings" like other people who do and treat others however they want. To this the Mishna answers: "your table is greater than their table and your crown is greater than their crown". Although we may not see it right now, the eventual reward for "doing the right thing" will come, and it will be a greater reward and honor than "the kings" we see have. This may be difficult to internalize but the Mishna continues and tells us the reason for this. The One who commanded us to act and treat people in a proper way is the Ultimate boss, and He is trustworthy to pay us properly.

It may be extremely difficult at times but we should all internalize this reality as much as possible. In the end the reward will come!

Shabbat Shalom,

Heath
