The verse in this weeks parsha says "do not kindle any flame in your settlements on the Shabbat Day". Although on a simple level this prohibits lighting fire on Shabbas the verse hints to a different aspect as well. The "fire" that is kindled can in fact be understood to hint to the fire of argument and strife. The verse would therefore be warning us to make sure we do not kindle the flames of argument and strife on the Shabbas Day. Shabbas is a time when we should be specifically careful to make sure peace and tranquility reside in our homes. Whether it is between husband and wife, child and parent or siblings it is a time we must be extremely careful with. Not only is Shabbas the holiest day and therefore it isn't proper that there should be any strife, but it is also the source of all blessing. It is the Shabbas day which influences all of the days of the coming week. The blessing for the coming week we receive on Shabbas. Since this day provides our sustenance for the entire week, our evil inclination tries its best to ruin this special time by driving strife and argument in our homes. This is especially difficult in the moments preparing for Shabbas which tend to be stressful. If we realize though that the blessing we receive on Shabbas for the entire week is tied to the happiness and tranquility we and our households have on this day, we should be able to overcome the difficult situations and make sure that we "kindle no flame".

Shabbat Shalom,

Heath
