R'Biderman related an amazing story that the Vilna Goan told over about the trust and faith of a simple jew in his time.
This man was a farmer in the town of the Vilna Goan and he needed to pay the landlord each year ahead for use of his field. The landlord sent messengers to the Jew to collect payment for the coming year but the Jewish farmer didn't have the money. The landlord sent back his messengers and told the jew that if he didn't pay him by a certain date he would be thrown into the dungeon with the rest of his family. The Vilna Goan saw this transpire and he said that the jew wasn't frazzled at all and continued on in life with joy and trust like there was nothing to worry about. This amazed the Goan and he decided that he would follow the jew. When the day came for the jew to pay the landlord he still didn't have the money but he began to make his way to the landlord's office in any case. The Goan decided that he would follow after the jew and see what transpires. The jew continued without any worries and with full faith in Hashem. When they approached the office of the landlord there was a large line of people waiting to go in. While they were waiting, a man emerged from the landlord's office and approached the penniless Jew.
He told him the following:
I was just inside negotiating a deal to sell a large piece of land to the the landlord, I wanted a higher price and he was insistent on a lower price. Neither one of us was willing to compromise on our offer. But the truth is, his offer is still really good and profitable for me. The price he offered would still be a great deal for me but since I am a businessman it will be a bad name for me if I show flexibility and accept the lower offer, it shows I was out negotiated. Instead you go in and act as a "broker" that will be able to negotiate the deal at the price the landlord offered. In exchange for this, I will give you a broker fee upfront.
He then handed the Jew the exact amount of money he needed to pay the landlord for the coming year. The Jewish farmer took the money entered into the office of the landlord and paid him and negotiated the deal. This the Goan said, is the trust of the simple Jew.
Shabbat Shalom,
Kasiva Vchasima Tova,
