The Torah tells us that when Yaakov fled to Lavan he stopped and went to sleep (at the site of the future temple mount). Without any roof or shelter Yaakov laid down and placed a number of rocks around his head for protection. The question is asked why did Yaakov only concern himself with protecting his head, what about the rest of his body which was exposed to danger?
The answer given is that Yaakov understood clearly that G-d "runs the show" and that nothing could harm him unless Hashem allows it. Nevertheless Yaakov understood that he has to do his part of effort. Yaakov didn't have any other resources or options to protect himself so he did what he could and had full faith in Hashem that He would protect him.
We have to do our part, but we need steadfast faith in Hashem that He Will ultimately take care of things.
Shabbat Shalom,
HeathÂ
