We read this week (in Israel) about the episode of the spies which Moshe sent to survey the Land of Israel. Chazal tell us that the spies, who were the tribal heads of the Jewish People in the desert, were afraid that once they enter the Land of Israel they would be removed from their leadership roles. It was this fear that led them (10 of the 12) to speak disparagingly about the Land of Israel and to convince the Nation that they would be unsuccessful in their battle to conquer the Land. The ramifications of their actions caused their entire generation to wander and perish in the desert. This grave sin was the root of all national tragedy throughout the generations as they sinned on the night of Tisha Ba'av which became a day of disaster.

Their desire for honor caused a national catastrophe which we suffer until this day. It is easier for a person to refuse a position of honor, than it is for him to step down after he has been given an honorable position but this something we can always reflect on. We might be in a position of leadership and honor but is there someone else who can do it better? If so, in the best interest of the Nation, community or organization it might be the right thing to step aside.

Shabbat Shalom,

Heath
