In these week's parsha we read a list of punishments that will G-d Forbid befall the Jewish People if they don't follow the Torah. The introduction to this section is that these punishments are in response for "not serving G-d with happiness and a good heart". Although there are various interpretations, one understanding is that the verse is commanding us that we must serve G-d with happiness. We all know how it is when someone does something for us with sadness, the entire act of kindness is almost meaningless. In a similar fashion when we serve G-d we must do so with happiness.
Our sages teach us that the Divine Presence only rests upon a person through the happiness in doing mitzvoth. The holy Arizal, said that the only reason he attained such spiritual levels was because he performed mitzvoth with happiness.
