In this week's Parsha we read about the Dina ,the daughter of Yaakov Avinu, who was violated by a man named Shechem. In response to this tragedy Dina's brothers Shimon and Levi devised a plan to trick Shechem and the people of the city which he (and his father) ruled over. Their intention was to avenge the honor of their sister and to kill the inhabitants of Shechem's land. Their intentions were obviously noble; they were filled with righteous indignation and zealousness to punish Shechem and his land. After avenging their sisters honor, their father Yaakov chastised them for their impulsive behaviour. Yaakov understood that although their actions may have seemed just and correct, they were missing the "bigger picture" and their actions were in fact incorrect.

Many times we are convinced that our actions are correct, we may be filled with zealousness for the sake of Heaven to correct some wrong or to take a certain path. It is important though that we take counsel in those that are wiser and older than us to make sure that our judgement is clear and not clouded by other considerations. Shimon and Levi could have consulted their father and asked his advice on how to proceed. Therefore it is always advisable to consult those who are greater, wiser and more knowledgeable, before taking dramatic steps.
Of course there may be situations where there is no one who we can consult with for various reasons, but when there is someone who we can consult with we should take the opportunity.

Shabbat Shalom,

Heath
