This week we will all read G-d Willing the special reading of Zachor, which recounts the evil nation of Amalek who attacked when we left Egypt on our way to receive the Torah. The commentators explain that Amalek is the root of forgetfulness. They cause the Jewish People to forget their connection with Hashem, to live in a world of total physicality without any connection to the spiritual.
We therefore have the commandment to remember what Amalek did in order to counter their power of forgetfulness. By reading from the Torah we can reconnect to the truth in the world and subjugate the power of Amalek. We should take this period of time to reflect and reconnect to the "real world" the reality that there is so much more beyond our physical existence. We live in a world filled with falsehood and we must recognize the truth of our existence.
Shabbat Shalom,
HeathÂ
